Elementary at Home Lesson Activities

Kids' Club

Sunday, March 29th

Resources such as conversation starters are available throughout the week on Instagram and Facebook.
ACTIVITY:  FORGIVENESS PARTY
WHAT YOU NEED:
upbeat music, a fun snack or treat (whatever you have at home!), any party supplies you have on-hand (hats, streamers, decorations, etc.)

WHAT YOU DO:
Throw a forgiveness party!
The father in today’s story was overwhelmed with joy when his son returned, so he threw a massive party. You can also celebrate forgiveness by having a mini-party of your own.
If you don’t have party supplies, make some! Make a paper chain, banners, or even your own party hats.

Then, turn up the music, challenge your kid to a dance-off, and enjoy the rest of your party.
As you’re enjoying your fun snack or treat, engage your family in a conversation about today’s Bible story.
  • How did the father react when his son returned? (He forgave him and threw a huge party to celebrate his son’s return.)
  • Where was the older brother when the younger son returned? (working in the field)
  • How did the older brother react when he found out that the party was for his younger brother who’d returned home? (He was angry.)
  • Why do you think the older brother was SO mad?  Have you ever been mad that someone else got something good that you didn’t think they deserved? (We’ve probably all felt this way. Help your child understand that feeling this way is okay, but when we hold onto those feelings, we can miss out on great things like celebrations and
    relationships with people we love.

Sunday, March 22nd

ACTIVITY
PART 1
You'll need some scrap wood, hammer, nails and safety googles for this activity.    Remind kids that in order to participate in this activity, they have to use self-control and keep themselves and others safe.  Have kids hammer nails into the wood, be safe!
What you can say:  “You hammered those nails pretty deep! It would be hard to get some of these out. We all make choices we can’t undo.  Today's bible story is about someone who learned that the hard way.”

ACTIVITY
PART 2
After the bible story video (below), have kids try to take some of the nails out of the wood, again supervise and be careful!
You can say:  When we make an unwise choice or a bad decision, we just can’t take it back. Have you ever felt stuck in a bad situation that you got yourself into?
(Allow for sharing, but don’t press kids, let them share what they are comfortable sharing.)

“Put up with one another. Forgive one another if you are holding something against someone. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you.”
Colossians 3:13, NIrV

Make memorizing fun!  Decorate different areas of your house with this month's memory verse - take some washable markers like crayola and decorate your bathroom mirror with Colossians 3:13.  Each morning this week your family can read it together and remember!

All month long we are learning about FORGIVENESS.  This week’s lesson comes from Matthew 5:1-2 and 23-24, open your bible as a family and read today's verses. Then take a look at how it applies to the characters in this week's video!
